The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff #bookreview #crimefiction #darkhumor #TuesdayBookBlog

Geeta’s no-good husband disappeared five years ago. She didn’t kill him, but everyone thinks she did–no matter how much she protests. But she soon discovers that being known as a “self-made” widow has some surprising perks. No one messes with her, no one threatens her, and no one tries to control (ahem, marry) her. It’s even been good for her business; no one wants to risk getting on her bad side by not buying her jewelry.

Freedom must look good on Geeta, because other women in the village have started asking for her help to get rid of their own no-good husbands…but not all of them are asking nicely.

Now that Geeta’s fearsome reputation has become a double-edged sword, she must decide how far to go to protect it, along with the life she’s built. Because even the best-laid plans of would-be widows tend to go awry.

I was undecided about downloading this book when I received a NetGalley widget, but the description was so appealing and original I couldn’t resist.

If you’re a fan of dark humor (I’m a devoted one), The Bandit Queens will give you plenty to snicker about. The banter between these women and their comments to others are hilarious at times. That being said, also prepare yourself for the horrific parts of the story – the physical and emotional abuse of women and their treatment as second class citizens. I wanted to crawl through the pages and strangle some of the men myself.

Geeta’s abusive husband disappeared five years ago, and that’s just fine with her. She’s doing fine without him and enjoys the single life. The village gossip doesn’t really bother her, and since she doesn’t care for children all that much, their comments about her being a witch roll right off. She’s busy running her jewelry business, attending loan group meetings, and saving for a refrigerator. She even adopts Bandit, a dog who’s an astute judge of character. Maybe she’s occasionally lonely and is basically estranged from her childhood best friend, but she’s content with her life. And then everything is upended when she’s asked to help kill the husband of a woman in her loan group.

Blackmail, murder, animal rescue, threatened poisoning, plans gone awry, gourd gifting, lizard stalking – it’s all here. There’s also female empowerment, reclaimed friendships, and well-deserved doses of karma. Even though I didn’t understand all the references, I enjoyed learning more about the culture and small village life, and I’m so glad I read this book. You’ll find yourself cheering for these remarkable women throughout the novel.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.  Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Writer’s Reading Corner: Georgia Rose #Romance #Suspense #CrimeFiction

May the fourth be with you!  Being the Star Wars nerd that I am, you know I couldn’t pass that up.  Occasionally, we come across books in which the characters feel so real it’s as if they’re sitting beside us while we read, and the writing evokes powerful emotions.  Georgia Rose was fortunate enough to come across a novel such as this, and it shaped the course of her own writing career.  Welcome, Georgia!

Thank you very much for inviting me onto your blog, Teri. I have thought long and hard about which book I should choose for my reading corner, after all there are so many fabulous ones out there, but it came down to this, which book I have been unable to get out of my head since I read it? Once that decision was made the choice was simple, A Shiny Coin for Carol Prentice by Mark Barry. I should perhaps say at this point that Mark is my editor, but I fell in love with his writing long before he became that. It is because of his writing that I asked him if he would be my editor in the first place.

I reviewed Shiny here, if anyone fancies taking a look. Barry’s writing makes you feel every emotion that runs through this unusual story. As you read you think you know what might be coming, you fear what you suspect might be the reason why Carol swore she would never go home and why she is going to such lengths to plan her revenge and yet you cannot look away. Barry’s writing is spare and yet full and rich, his characters some of the most colourful you will ever read and the story humorous and yet totally, totally serious. Even now, writing these few words about it makes me want to go and open it again.

It costs less to download than one shiny coin and I challenge all who venture this way to go and get it, you can thank me later.

Instincts: Savannah PD Series by Rachel Renee #bookreview #thriller #suspense #TuesdayBookBlog @AuthorRachelRM

Instincts: A way of thinking or feeling that is not learned.
Instincts: Drivers of behaviors.
Instincts: Help us to survive.

An abandoned factory in the dead of night—urine and decay permeating the air, setting the scene for the most recent horror film—only this isn’t the movies. The silhouette of the person hanging from the rafters is real life and the beginning of a case.
I’m detective Eliza Sheppard and it’s my job to determine what has happened to someone at the end of their journey here on earth. It’s my job to catch the guys or gals who felt it was in them to end that person’s journey. And it’s my job to put those criminals behind bars. Armed with my team of detectives, and most importantly my instincts, I set out to find what happened to respected Savannah business woman, Loretta Michaels. With little evidence and doubts from others, I am driven to follow a lead that many others suspect could be a wild goose chase. Will my instincts lead me to a killer? And how far am I willing to go to bring the killer to justice?  – Goodreads.com

This is the first book I’ve read in this series – and it wastes no time tossing the reader into the midst of a puzzling murder.  Eliza has worked hard to get where she is; the drive to put criminals behind bars is in her blood, being passed down from her father.  She’s a flawed, charismatic protagonist with a strong affinity for margaritas, a determined, match-making mother, a best friend who may or may not want to be more, and little time for a personal life.  In short – someone most readers can identify with in some way.

With several characters seemingly having motive and opportunity, it’s not immediately clear who the murderer is, and I suspected nearly everyone at some point.  That’s what makes an engaging crime thriller, right?

If you’re a fan of intriguing crime fiction that keeps you guessing, this is a series to look into.

#BadMoonRising Angel M.B. Chadwick #IndieAuthor #suspense #thriller

Welcome, Angel M.B. Chadwick!  As a child, Angel had an unusual, but original career goal, and her WIP is a fascinating blend of genres.

Fear is like a looking glass….

What’s the best horror/thriller movie you’ve seen this year so far?

The Inherited. It was on Lifetime Movie Network. It was the only movie that caught my interest and kept it. It had real substance and originality.

What fictional character would be your nightmare neighbor?

Beetlejuice. Seriously, I used to have nightmares about that creepy dude. I love horror. And I’m not easily scared, but for some reason he’s the only one.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be Frankenstein’s bride. I also wished “The Munsters” were my family.

If you could go back in time, where would you go and what would you do?

I would sit and have a cup of tea with Edgar Allan Poe.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on my next book which is a bit of sci-fi fantasy, steampunk, mystery, thriller, speculative fiction, suspense.

When you finish a book, do you take time off or jump into another project?

I always jump into another project. I’m a workaholic writer for which I don’t want a cure for, if there is one.

If you could change one thing about your writing career, what would it be?

To be more financially stable than I am now.

I had the pleasure of meeting Rachel Renee at a couple of author events recently, and just finished this first book in her compelling Savannah PD Series.  Rachel had an interesting experience in Savannah recently, and brought a picture to share with us.  I’ve always been a believer, but if you’re not, this picture may give you something to think about!

Favorite Halloween costume as a child or adult?

Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. It’s so much fun to decorate and dress up to be something/someone other than yourself. I often find myself going back to a witch or vampire costume. Sometimes I wonder if I had been one of them in a previous life.

Any paranormal experiences you’d like to share?

Recently my husband and I took a trip to Savannah, Georgia for some research for the series that I am writing. We went on one of those Haunted Ghost Tours. While I didn’t see anything at the time, or experience anything seemingly paranormal, I took some pictures to check out later. The next morning while going through them I came across a ghostly figure in one of my cemetery pictures and also some movement in the darkness in one of my videos. Both things I did not see the night before.  What do you think?

What fictional character would be your nightmare neighbor?

Probably Leatherface and his family. I’d be very leery about going over for a neighborhood barbeque. “Hey, is that Jim you’re wearing?” “What kind of burgers are we having?” would not be a question I’d want the answer to either.  Also, with all that chain sawing going on, I’d probably never get any sleep. Plus, there is something just so unsettling about that sound and the thought of one of my body parts being hacked off by it.

What are you working on now?

I am currently working on the third book in my Detective Series. No title yet, but will hopefully be the conclusion of my main characters biggest case.

Biggest horror/thriller novel influence?

I love James Patterson and almost everything that he has published. My current detective series idea came from his women’s murder mystery books.

When you finish a book, do you take time off or jump into another project?

I usually take some time off. I will read for a while, usually from different, more light-hearted genres, before I start on the next book.
