The United States of America has been crippled. Violently contained by a global military force and left without its leaders, the country has become shattered and chaotic. A decade has passed since the first strike and a new landscape has emerged where survival is more important than anything else. Who will uncover the truth behind the attack and revive this once great nation?

It certainly won’t be Cassidy and Lloyd since they couldn’t care less about that stuff. She is a young woman on a mission to honor her mother’s dying wish, which is to toss her ashes off the Golden Gate Bridge. He is an infamous serial killer she broke out of Rikers Island since hiring a bodyguard wasn’t working out. Not the perfect plan, but having an insane, oddly charming murder-junkie on your side…

Downsizing the TBR Pile

Accomplished some things this past week – finished two books for review and also 13638131one in my own pile, The Unbound, by Victoria Schwab.

This was the second in The Archived series and I don’t know if the author plans another book, but I’d be first in line to read it!  The extent of her imagination fascinates me and the worldbuilding is superb.  Schwab’s books have never failed to keep me engrossed from the first page and this one was no exception.

Not sure how much I’ll get accomplished this week – I’m throwing myself into the query trenches, so wish me luck!

Book Releases I’m Excited About in 2016

I know there are more, but most of these are sequels I’ve been impatiently waiting for.  I’m also excited about Crooked Kingdom (Six of Crows #2) by Leigh Bardugo, but a cover hasn’t been released.  Of the above books, I’m thrilled to have received an ARC of The Fireman from Edelweiss!

What books are you looking forward to this year?

Downsizing the TBR Pile

This was a good week – finished Graduation Day by Joelle Charbonneau and two other books for review and more 18222699than halfway through the next book in the TBR pile, The Unbound by Victoria Schwab.

Gotta admit, I was disappointed in Graduation Day – mainly because of the highly questionable decisions made by the leaders.  A teenager is given a list of names by the president and told to kill those people – this is the best idea to stop a revolution?  Some inconsistencies with the level of technology available also gave me pause.  I’m glad I finished this trilogy – it had some likable characters and a twist near the end, but somewhere along the way seemed to lose its momentum.

Signal Boosting, Reviews, and Accolades

Don’t miss these – highly recommend!

Michael Patrick Hicks

In December, I was a part of two anthologies – Crime & Punishment and The Cyborg Chronicles – which means it’s time to give them a bit of a signal boost! If you haven’t gotten these two books yet, now’s the time!

The Cyborg Chronicles is only 99c for a LIMITED TIME! Act fast!

I had a lot of fun writing for these two anthologies, and it feels wonderful to see readers responding so positively to these books as a whole, as well as my efforts within each.

My Crime & Punishment story, The Marque, is a weird western that has gotten a few nods from readers, who call it:

a powerful yet bleak vision of our future. Michael Patrick Hicks’ story completely swept me away-I found it hard to put down.

scary, creepy, and exciting

Samuel Peralta does the foreword on this one, and it’s a sublime bit…

Excerpt from Chapter one

The water rushes over my head. I’m sinking and don’t know why. With my breath held, I have trouble stopping the air from escaping since the pressure drives the air up and out. I try to keep my mouth closed, but the water pressure pushes the air out more and more. Will I pass out? In the distance, the light is dim. To rise to the surface in time might not be possible─I need to breathe right now. Toward ending the pain in my chest, my rambling mind rationalizes taking a deep breath—even knowing it will end my life. In conflict with the irrational thought of ending it, my body won’t let me suck in the water, as it fights to retain the little bit of oxygen left to fuel my brain.

The despair is nearly overwhelming, and my mind considers other ways to battle the feeling. What more could I have done with my life? The pressure becomes more intense, and I’m about to lose it all, and I decide I’ve lived the way I wanted and have no regrets. I close my eyes and hear only the roar of the sea. I’m so tired. Exhausted. Sleep will fix everything, and I want to give in.
