Derby Weekend

We’re having bad storms here this morning and our WiFi is out. I’m posting this from my phone, so I hope it works.

This past weekend was Derby here in Kentucky. We attended parties on Friday, The Oaks, and Saturday, Derby, at friends’ houses. It’s always a weekend filled with fun, laughter, too much food, and mostly lost bets. Trust me – no one’s getting rich off these bets. All of our kids made it except Son #2. With it being graduation weekend here, his restaurant schedule didn’t allow him to attend.

It was also a weekend filled with milestones. Our friends’ son and his fiance’ had engagement pictures made, we met her family, and they checked out wedding and reception venues. Other friends’ son and his wife brought their one month old son – his first of many Derby parties. We consider these friends family, so it really feels like our family is expanding.

The first picture was taken at a local liquor store on a run the morning of Derby. How many of you have horses in your stores? The second is a napkin with a clever play on words. The last picture displays the the Holy Grail – the coveted rose necklace and horse hat. Every year, we draw names of the horses running in the big race. If your horse wins, you’re the chosen one who is granted possession of them over the next year – but only after you put them on, have numerous embarrasing photos taken, and drink a shot of bourbon (not a firm requirement).

Son #1 came for the weekend with another kind of Holy Grail – for me, anyway. He brought a Cheesecake Factory Reese’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Cake Cheesecake. Not just a slice – a whole cheesecake. It’s a miracle I let it out of the house considering it’s my absolute favorite dessert on the face of the Earth. I even shared with others at the party. Without anyone having to pry it out of my hands or bribe me. Seriously. Okay, so there’s no actual footage of that – you’ll have to take my word for it.

Have a great week!

  1. Sounds like a fun weekend! Coming from a horsey community (more western than racing) there was a clothing store that had a horse in front of it. All the kids wanted to sit on it of course. I have a picture somewhere of my small daughter on it.

    1. There are plenty of laughs involved for sure, Mae. This year the person who won the horse head left it under the covers on her hubby’s side of the bed – Godfather style. He didn’t even notice it until the next morning, lol.

  2. The parties sound fun, Teri. LOL, congrats on coping with the cheesecake.
I hope you didn’t get any storm damage.
Poor Bond. Daphne & Velma have become frightened of the (unfortunately frequent) sonic booms from the Air Force base not very far away. I still jump out of my skin every time. Why they can’t do that crap over White Sands Missel Range or somewhere else in the desert is beyond me…
    Anyhow, wishing you sunshine. Hugs.

    1. I doubt Bond would survive at your place, Teagan, lol. Storms only started bothering him when lightning hit really close a few months back (probably close to the sound of a sonic boom). Now he scrambles to get under the bed at the slightest sound of thunder. And I was quite proud of myself for having only ONE piece of cheesecake. It truly was a struggle.
