You might remember several weeks ago I mentioned our youngest son had his final college concert. Well, there was another one this past Friday – but it was really his final concert. I told hubby it was like the KISS Seriously-This-Is-The-Last-Time-We’re-Not-Kidding-No-Clowning-You’ll-Never-See-Us-On-A-Stage-Again Farewell Tour. We were just thrilled we had one more chance to see him play. And I’d also still see KISS again if they were in my neck of the woods.
If you’re a fan of author Leigh Bardugo, you know that Shadow and Bone dropped on Netflix Friday. The show blends two of her book series into one story. I haven’t read the Shadow and Bone trilogy, but the Six of Crows duology (soon to be trilogy) remains one of my favorite fantasy series. When reading, most readers form an image in their minds of what the characters look like – I certainly do. Six of Crows features one of the most intriguing characters I’ve come across – Kaz Brekker. When I saw pictures of the actor cast in his role, he looked nothing like what I expected, but I decided I’d wait to pass judgement until I’d watched a few episodes. I’ve seen two, and he hasn’t won me over yet. I feel like they nailed Jesper’s and Inej’s characters, so maybe that will make up for it.
We’ve got the youngest son’s graduation coming up this weekend and family arriving mid week, so I may be scarce around the blogosphere this week. The graduation is being held outside at the football stadium, and there’s no backup plan in case of rain, so I’ve been keeping an eye on the weather. It’s looking good so fa – keep your fingers crossed. Have a great week!
Congrats to your son, Teri! I’m sure the concert was beautiful.
I plan on reading the books before watching the show! I’ve heard good things about the show already. 👍
Enjoy your week!

Thanks, Jenn! I couldn’t wait to watch the show even though I haven’t read all the books. Friends in my book club are saying the storyline is very different – some are okay with that, some not so much. Hope you enjoy them!

🤞 for good weather!
My oldest recently let me know that her Masters program was invited to attend the May graduation ceremony though she doesn’t finish/graduate until the end of June, and I just went “uh…beach trumps graduation that’s not a graduation but you can stay and attend then meet us at the beach the next day.” She totally agreed that beach > graduation ceremony that’s not graduation. Lol.
Hope you enjoy your family and your sons big day!

I totally agree with that logic, Tessa, lol. Beach first when it’s not the real graduation! Our son’s university scheduled his graduation a week earlier than usual and his ceremony takes place right in the middle of the KY Derby (don’t know what they were thinking, lol). The ceremony for the spring and winter 2020 grads is Mother’s Day weekend. Glad those grads get to finally have their ceremony.

I feel the same way about Bardugo’s Six of Crows, and as soon as I saw the casting for Kaz, one of my favorite characters of all time, I knew I’d never be able to watch it, so I guess it’s a good thing I quit watching tv altogether a few years ago. I feel the same about movies that are poorly cast. (Don’t get me started on the Jack Reacher film.) I just can’t move past my mental image of the characters, and Hollywood almost NEVER gets it right. (Sometimes, it’s like they try to cast an actor who’s the exact opposite in every regard.) But that’s okay. I’m fine re-reading my favorite books, so it’s not a problem these days. 😀
Glad you got to see your son play again. It was like having an encore performance, just for you! 😀

I never read the Reacher books, but hubby did (and he’s not much of a reader). Although he’s a Cruise fan, he admitted he’s nowhere close to how the character is described in the books. I didn’t know you’d given up TV, Marcia. Honestly, with most of what’s on these days, you’re not missing much. I might be able to make a dent in my TBR if I did the same, lol.

Your hubby got it right. Reacher is a great character, and a HUGE man, described as 6’5″ or so, with hands the size of “dinner plates” or “hams.” He’s so big that when he walks into a bar, people instinctively back up! (He’s a good guy, though.) Tom Cruise is 5’6″ and I’m pretty sure *I* could take him! I just laughed every time I saw the ad on TV saying “Tom Cruise IS Jack Reacher,” and then I’d yell, “No, he IS NOT!” 😉 (See, I warned you not to get me started.) 😀
And yeah, I realized one day that none of the sitcoms were really funny any more, and I wasn’t into the dramas, and in no way could TV compete with BOOKS for my limited time. So, I gave it up about 5 years or so ago. I haven’t missed it once. And while I still don’t have time to read all the books I want to, I sure do get through a whole lot more of them. 😀 Not for everyone, I suppose, but it works great for me.

That’s awesome your son did another concert. And now the youngest is graduating. Great family time all the way around. I hope the weather cooperates for graduation.
I haven’t read Six of Crows but know it’s a fan favorite. When you fall in love with a character, it’s hard adapting to Hollywood casting!

It was nice to be back in that theater one more time. We didn’t get to talk with him after the concert because he was taking pics with all his friends, but that was fine with us. He won’t be seeing some of them for much longer. You’re right about Hollywood casting, Mae – some are really perfect, but others I have to wonder what they were thinking.

So cool that there was one more performance. Take a week away to enjoy real life. We’ll all still be here.

I’m not watching the show until I finish trilogy and SOC duology. It’s great your son’s concert went well.

I’m not that patient, Yesha, lol. I knew I’d start it the day it was released.

haha, I can stay way. I just don’t want it reveal spoiler as I haven’t read SOC specifically and from all the hype I have seen I want to enjoy that duology.

Congratulations on the graduation. I always hate it when a movie of a book blows the character or the plot. It is usually one or the other. Thanks, Teri.

Right? I’m sure I’ve come across some movies that nailed the casting, but none are immediately coming to mind. Thanks, John!

What wonderful family activities! Congrats! I saw “Shadow and Bone” and started to watch it last night, but wound up switching over to “Dances with Wolves.” 🙂

Thanks, Jan! I haven’t seen Dances with Wolves in years, but I remember really liking it. We’re Costner fans.

So far I have watched the first 4 episodes of Shadow and Bone and I agree Kaz just isn’t working for me but I am absolutely loving Jesper. I really wanted to reread the books but I didn’t manage to. I think I heard something once about SoC becoming a trilogy but then forgot about it.

Jesper has that perfect blend of snark and narcissism, lol. I laughed several times at his comments. Whenever that third SoC book comes out, I’ll drop everything and start reading.

For me he’s the only actor who is perfect. I’m not one to really picture characters when I’m reading but when I watch adaptations for books I always say that’s not how I pictured them but for the most part it always works out. I’m really enjoying the show and feel like for the most part all of the actors are doing a pretty good job.

Thanks, Miriam! It seems like we just moved him into the dorm, and here we are four years later. Guess I blinked too long.

I know, Teri! His next few years may go as fast!
I feel like just attending my daughter’s graduation and taking the photos of her and her then boyfriend (now husband), but it was 2007. They now have two kids!

Exactly – exciting, but also bittersweet.

It all sounds very exciting, Teri. My oldest son is doing his final year of high school and is working very hard to get into computer science at university. The academic requirements are very high for this course. It must be a great feeling when they graduate and your job is done.

What a great field for him to go into, Robbie – plenty of opportunity in that area. It’s definitely a feeling of accomplishment when they graduate. And it was nice when I made that last tuition payment back in January!

Glad you got another chance to hear your son in concert. I expect you’ll get to hear him again when he performs outside college though.

He’d love to still perform when he moves to Austin, TX, so I’m hoping we have another chance. Being a music major, I think it’s a lifelong love for him.
