WWW Wednesday is a meme from Sam at Taking On A World Of Words
The Three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
The Martian will always be a favorite of mine, but I missed this author’s last book. Luckily, I received an ARC of his newest novel. The humor of The Martian is present, but maybe not quite as prevalent. Still, Ryland Grace is one smart dude. And the math is wayyyyy over my head.
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission–and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.
Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that’s been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it’s up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.
Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian–while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.
I’m such a fan of the Astral Conspiracy Series, and Alexa is reading The Nine to me. Nefarious activities are afoot, and I have no idea what will happen to these characters. Just hope my favs survive!
He can’t trust his allies, won’t trust his enemies. Now he fears that he shouldn’t trust even himself.
Landon Thorne is convinced the key to defeating the Astrals is in the vault — a repository of ancient artifacts, origins unknown, covered with undeciphered glyphs. He’s also convinced he’s the one person on the planet who can translate the markings.
But strange, frightening things happen every time he gets close to the relics.
His allies decide it’s not safe to let him near the vault, so they force him to take a new mission. He’s captured by the Nine — the nefarious organization he’s been running from.
Their leader makes him an offer he can’t refuse — study the Dropa Stones for the answers they seek. Or else. To do that, he needs a cipher. And there’s only one place he can get it.
Getting in will be difficult. Getting out may prove impossible.
It wasn’t the mention of a Jane Eyre retelling that caught my attention – it was the word “exorcist”. Yes, please! This story oozes gothic overtones, and I love that it’s set in Ethiopia. It doesn’t release until November, but I’ll definitely be looking for future releases by this author.
What the heart desires, the house destroys…
Kiersten White meets Tomi Adeyemi in this Ethiopian-inspired debut fantasy retelling of Jane Eyre.
Andromeda is a debtera—an exorcist hired to cleanse households of the Evil Eye. When a handsome young heir named Magnus Rochester reaches out to hire her, Andromeda quickly realizes this is a job like no other, with horrifying manifestations at every turn, and that Magnus is hiding far more than she has been trained for. Death is the most likely outcome if she stays, but leaving Magnus to live out his curse alone isn’t an option. Evil may roam the castle’s halls, but so does a burning desire.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off as a comp title? You know I requested this one. I’m hoping it’s just as entertaining.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off meets Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist in this romp through the city that never sleeps from the New York Times bestselling author of Since You’ve Been Gone, Morgan Matson.
Two girls. One night. Zero phones.
Kat and Stevie—best friends, theater kids, polar opposites—have snuck away from the suburbs to spend a night in New York City. They have it all planned out. They’ll see a play, eat at the city’s hottest restaurant, and have the best. Night. Ever. What could go wrong?
Well. Kind of a lot?
They’re barely off the train before they’re dealing with destroyed phones, family drama, and unexpected Pomeranians. Over the next few hours, they’ll have to grapple with old flames, terrible theater, and unhelpful cab drivers. But there are also cute boys to kiss, parties to crash, dry cleaning to deliver (don’t ask), and the world’s best museum to explore.
Over the course of a wild night in the city that never sleeps, both Kat and Stevie will get a wake-up call about their friendship, their choices…and finally discover what they really want for their future.
That is, assuming they can make it to Grand Central before the clock strikes midnight.
I loved the entire Astral Conspiracy series. I know you’re going to enjoy that.
Take Me Home Tonight sounds like a fun romp. I’ll be looking forward to your review on that one.

I’m just afraid some of my favs will be killed off in The Nine! I’ve heard that author is plain mean that way, lol. Take Me Home Tonight does sound fun – I’ll need that after all the tension of The Nine and Hail Mary.

Looks like a great list, Teri. Take Me Home Tonight sounds fun. Of course, I’m going to have the Eddie Money song in my head for the rest of the day. You might be too young to remember it! 🙂

Andy Weir is a good writer. I’m glad to see he gas another book out. I just finished Eternal Road by John Howell and enjoyed it.

Love the two books I’ve read by Weir – way over my head scientifically, but fascinating. I’ve heard of that Howell guy. Really enjoy his books!

So funny you said that about the Eddie Money song – that’s exactly what’s playing in my head right now!

I didn’t know she could read to me until I discovered it in an email a couple years ago. She can’t read ARCs to me, but anything I’ve purchased on Kindle she can.

That’s awesome. Makes it seem even more worthwhile to have one!

I admit… I cringe at the mention of math, Teri.
Kudos to Staci. And the last two have piqued my curiosity. Thanks for this post. Hugs on the wing!

Yep – I pretty much skim through those detailed math descriptions – they’re wasted on me. Hugs, Teagan!

It can cause nightmares, Yesha, lol. I’m sure it all makes sense to some high-minded scientific types – but that isn’t me.

Nice to see Staci’s book featured here, Teri. Project Hail Mary sounds very War of the Worlds-ish. I have been listening to the CD [AGAIN!]

I don’t want to give spoilers, but Hail Mary is unlike any sci-fi book I’ve read. I can easily see this one being developed into a movie. Enjoy War of the Worlds – again!
