WWW Wednesday is a meme from Sam at Taking On A World Of Words
The Three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
I’m a fan of Roth’s Divergent series, but she’s moved into the adult area with this new book, which has mixed reviews. It popped up on my NetGalley shelf (not sure how exactly), and by the description it sounds perfect for me, but I’m struggling with it. The writing is wonderfully descriptive, but I don’t especially care for any of the characters. I keep reading because I feel like I’m on the verge of something, but so far it hasn’t happened. I even flipped to the back and read the ending, which is something I rarely do. At this point, I’m not sure if I’ll finish this book.
The first novel written for an adult audience by the mega-selling author of the Divergent franchise: five twenty-something heroes famous for saving the world when they were teenagers must face even greater demons—and reconsider what it means to be a hero . . . by destiny or by choice.
A decade ago near Chicago, five teenagers defeated the otherworldly enemy known as the Dark One, whose reign of terror brought widespread destruction and death. The seemingly un-extraordinary teens—Sloane, Matt, Ines, Albie, and Esther—had been brought together by a clandestine government agency because one of them was fated to be the “Chosen One,” prophesized to save the world. With the goal achieved, humankind celebrated the victors and began to mourn their lost loved ones.
Ten years later, though the champions remain celebrities, the world has moved forward and a whole, younger generation doesn’t seem to recall the days of endless fear. But Sloane remembers. It’s impossible for her to forget when the paparazzi haunt her every step just as the Dark One still haunts her dreams. Unlike everyone else, she hasn’t moved on; she’s adrift—no direction, no goals, no purpose. On the eve of the Ten Year Celebration of Peace, a new trauma hits the Chosen: the death of one of their own. And when they gather for the funeral at the enshrined site of their triumph, they discover to their horror that the Dark One’s reign never really ended.
I’m a HUGE fan of Wilson’s Repairman Jack series, and this short novel is a prequel/companion to Nightworld, the last book of that series. Jack’s absent from this one and I miss him horribly, but it was so nice to sink back into his world, creepy and dangerous as it is. I’d highly recommend this series to fans of the mysterious and otherworldly.
Twilight has come. Night will follow.
It will begin in the heavens and end in the Earth
But before that…the rules will be broken
The Change is coming and the world as we know it is ending. Sixteen-year-old Ellie has changed. She looks the same but her mother detects someone else looking out through her blue eyes. Ellie builds a “shelter” in her room with an entrance that leads…elsewhere.
And what of the convoy of tractor trailers Hari Tate watches drive up a mountain road and return without the trailers…leaving nothing on the mountain. What are they shipping?
And the writer who finds a hole in the floor of his NYC apartment and tumbles through into… elsewhere.
They will all find each other and find their answers in the electromagnetic pulses piercing the Earth from Out There, pulses that no one should hear, but some do. But they are not simply pulses. They are SIGNALZ.
I Killed Zoe Spanos is up next. Doesn’t it sound like a perfect beach book? I hope to read this one over vacation – while on the beach.
This gripping thriller follows two teens whose lives become inextricably linked when one confesses to murder and the other becomes determined to uncover the real truth no matter the cost.
What happened to Zoe won’t stay buried…
When Anna Cicconi arrives to the small Hamptons village of Herron Mills for a summer nanny gig, she has high hopes for a fresh start. What she finds instead is a community on edge after the disappearance of Zoe Spanos, a local girl who has been missing since New Year’s Eve. Anna bears an eerie resemblance to Zoe, and her mere presence in town stirs up still-raw feelings about the unsolved case. As Anna delves deeper into the mystery, stepping further and further into Zoe’s life, she becomes increasingly convinced that she and Zoe are connected–and that she knows what happened to her.
Two months later, Zoe’s body is found in a nearby lake, and Anna is charged with manslaughter. But Anna’s confession is riddled with holes, and Martina Green, teen host of the Missing Zoe podcast, isn’t satisfied. Did Anna really kill Zoe? And if not, can Martina’s podcast uncover the truth?
Hopefully Chosen Ones shapes up for you. I’ve gotten myself to the point where I quit when I start feeling like that. There’s just too many books to waste time when we aren’t entertained. Every now and then the book changes course though! Enjoy your other reads. ☺️

After I wrote this post, I made the decision last night to quit reading it. Too many other books waiting, right? I figure at 50%, it’s not changing course anytime soon.

That’s really good to make it half way. I’m lucky to get past 30% anymore, whereas before I’d make myself finish. Better luck on your other books! ☺️

SignalZ sounds spooky, and I killed Zoe Spanos does sound like a great beach read. I’m still up to my ears in Harry Dresden, LOL.

I think you’d enjoy Repairman Jack, Mae – you should look into those. I bought the first Dresden book and hope to read it soon – all credit goes to Marcia!

I’ll remember that about Repairman Jack.
And Marcia is at fault for hooking me back into the series. I read the first four Dresden books two years ago and then got sidetracked. Now I can’t imagine why. Each one just keeps getting better and better. Can’t wait to hear what you think of Harry! 🙂

That surprises me about Chosen Ones. The blurb sounds really good and I really liked the Divergent series. I have had reads like that thought, where the writing was pretty good . . . but all the characters were horrible. It’s so frustrating.

I was also surprised when the reviews started coming out Denise. I’ll read her future books, but doubt I’ll go back to this series.

I got through 20% of I Killed Zoe Spanos while waiting for my cat at the vet, and I’m intrigued! Already have a couple of theories.

Ooh, SignalZ sounds like a book I should avoid right now! Too frightening.
I’ve never read Veronica Roth…so I would probably not begin with an “iffy” adult novel. I hope you end up enjoying it.
Thanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.

I wouldn’t recommend starting with this Roth novel, lol. Divergent is amazing – one of the best dystopians I’ve read. Have a great week, Laurel-Rain!

It sounded like everything I’d love – the “chosen” ones with magical powers defeating the “Dark One”. It’s just a little slow for my taste.

Priscilla, you’d absolutely love the Repairman Jack series – you should really check it out. Around 18-20 books maybe?

So true – some folks loved it, while others were like me. But I’ll still check out her future books. Her writing style is fantastic.

Teri, I also enjoyed Roth’s Divergent series, but I would also struggle if I wasn’t liking the characters much either. I hope it gets better for you! Take care and happy reading. 🙂

Liking the characters isn’t always required, but I just didn’t feel invested in them, but other reviewers loved them. Just personal reading tastes, I guess. Happy Reading, Jessica!

After reading some reviews, I’d also decided to skip it, but then it wound up on my NetGalley shelf – maybe I wished for it at some point. The newest read is going much better!
