Today’s author has no problem spending time in cemeteries – in fact, she enjoys exploring them and taking ghost walks. She’s also generously offering one of her e-books (your choice) as a GIVEAWAY to a random commenter. The winner will be announced here next Thursday, October 24th. Welcome Joan Hall!
The WINNER of an e-book is MICHELE JONES! Joan will be in touch with you about your choice. Congrats Michele!
Would you rather walk through a haunted graveyard at midnight or spend the night in a haunted, abandoned house?
I love to explore old cemeteries. The older, the better. I like to envision how the people lived. So, I would choose the haunted graveyard. Maybe I’d ask one of those ghosts a few questions.
Would you rather be a vampire or a werewolf?
A vampire. I’d been rather fond of them since the days of Dark Shadows and Barnabas Collins. I’ve seen some pretty good-looking male vampires here and there. Oh wait, maybe I should clarify I’ve only seen them in the movies or on TV.
Would you rather boogie down to Monster Mash or get your groove on to Thriller?
Monster Mash because it sounds like so much fun. And they had a fabulous list of guests at the party—Zombies, Wolfman, Dracula, and his son.
If you had the opportunity to live anywhere in the world for a year while writing a book that took place in the same setting, where would you choose?
Keeping it close to home, but I would probably choose New Mexico. I plan to set at least one book of my next series in the Land of Enchantment and it would be nice to learn firsthand more about the culture.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I enjoy reading (wish I had more time). I’ve already mentioned I like to explore cemeteries, but I also like to take ghost walks. I love to hear the legends and folklore behind the stories. We (husband and I) have been on ghost walks in nearby Jefferson, Texas, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Vicksburg, Mississippi. However, I’ve yet to encounter a ghost.
What are you working on now?
A group of short stories that I plan to publish in the next few months. Most are in the mystery/suspense genre, but a couple are romance, and at least two involve characters who served in the military.
Some people take secrets to the grave…
Three years after her husband’s murder, Christine Lawrence still struggles for balance. She has a rewarding career and a close circle of friends but feels oddly unfulfilled. Worse, the close relationship she once had with her teenage daughter has grown increasingly strained.
Former FBI agent, Vince Green, is battling demons of his own—painful secrets that drove him from Driscoll Lake. Newly resettled in the small town, he makes his living as a private investigator.
When Vince and Christine cross paths, stumbling over the body of a murder victim, he’s forced to confront memories he thought long buried. The circumstances surrounding the killing are eerily similar to a victim from his past.
As the body count continues to rise, Christine finds herself drawn to Vince. With a murderer stalking the streets of Driscoll Lake, neither is aware the killer has targeted her as the next victim—or that Vince’s past is key to unmasking a disturbed and deadly killer.
Author Bio:
Joan Hall likes to create character-driven fiction with strong, determined female leads and enigmatic male characters. She has always enjoyed reading a good mystery or suspense story, so it’s only natural that’s her favorite writing genre. When she’s not writing, Joan likes to take nature walks, observe the night skies, and explore old cemeteries. She also likes ghost walks and learning local folklore. Joan and her husband live in Texas with their three cats.

I love exploring cemeteries too, Joan, but, er, I’ll skip the haunted ones, thank you very much.:)
And ooh, I was such a fan of the original Dark Shadows. Barnabas was such a tortured soul. Quentin was the one who really stole my heart, but I’ve always had a soft spot for Barnabas. When I was in Maine, we saw the location they used for the opening shot in DS (the waves beating up against the rock-face). It’s in Bar Harbor.
Unclear Purposes is a fantastic novel. I hope many new readers discover it!

Good interview! I’m surprised Joan’s been on so many ghost tours and has never seen a ghost. Timing wasn’t right, I guess.

That seems to be the story of my life. My husband had a class reunion in a haunted hotel and the ghost didn’t show. Guess she didn’t like Classic Rock music.

Why doesn’t it surprise me that we both liked Dark Shadows? I didn’t know the location was in Bar Harbor. Hope to visit there someday.

And I think the house is in Connecticut. I seem to remember reading about that before. Either way that opening was very moody!

I love visiting cemeteries as well. Like you said “the older the better.” My favorite vampire movie is Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Your new book sounds intriguing!

How fun to learn more about Joan. I loved Dark Shadows as a kid. LOL, I wore a scarf around my neck for a year, to at least make a feeble attempt at obstructing any vampires I might run into. Hugs!

Too funny, Teagan. Not a bad idea, however.

Maybe you should have worn a garlic necklace also, Teagan. You never know.

I was terrified of the opening credits of Dark Shadows when I was a little kid. I’ve never seen the show! (and more cats!!) 🙂

One day my Mom has to run an errand. I begged to stay home so I could watch the show. Got pretty scared being alone in the house.

I couldn’t get past the opening sequence. Too scary for someone 4 or 5!

I was a few years older (8 or 9). Even though it was four in the afternoon and broad daylight, I never stayed home alone again to watch it!

Right there with you exploring old cemeteries. Love it. Will keep an eye out for your collection. I love short fiction (writing and reading it). Any idea when yours will be out?

Hopefully in the spring. I’m getting ready for NaNoWriMo but I’ll release the short stories first.

Sarah, I should have said I’ll release the short stories before I do my next novel. One story is a prequel.

So you have a collection of short stories as well as a prequel coming out? 🙂 Yes?

I love your ghost tour posts. I’d love to go on another one myself one day. I might get the chance this Spring. All I remember about the original Dark Shadows is that it scared the heck out of me as a kid. The remake in the 90s was fun, but didn’t last. I thought the movie with Depp was awful.

I wasn’t wild about the remake. Didn’t see the movie. My friends and I used to pretend we were Dark Shadows characters during recess. I always wanted to be Josette.

What a fantastic interview! It is interesting that everyone who has been on Terri’s Bad Moon Rising tour has chosen cemeteries and vampires. 🙂 I too LOVE doing Ghost tours. It’s such a great opportunity to learn about days gone by. I’ve done ghost tours in New Orleans, Fort Worth and Nashville and loved them! Thanks for sharing, Joan. And, thanks for hosting Joan today, Teri!

When my kids were little, we always danced to Monster Mash (a lot) in the month of October. Your answers brought a smile to my face, Joan. Wishing you all the best.
Thanks, Teri. Another great job hosting.
