I had the pleasure of meeting Rachel Renee at a couple of author events recently, and just finished this first book in her compelling Savannah PD Series. Rachel had an interesting experience in Savannah recently, and brought a picture to share with us. I’ve always been a believer, but if you’re not, this picture may give you something to think about!
Instincts: A way of thinking or feeling that is not learned.
Instincts: Drivers of behaviors.
Instincts: Help us to survive.
An abandoned factory in the dead of night—urine and decay permeating the air, setting the scene for the most recent horror film—only this isn’t the movies. The silhouette of the person hanging from the rafters is real life and the beginning of a case.
I’m detective Eliza Sheppard and it’s my job to determine what has happened to someone at the end of their journey here on earth. It’s my job to catch the guys or gals who felt it was in them to end that person’s journey. And it’s my job to put those criminals behind bars. Armed with my team of detectives, and most importantly my instincts, I set out to find what happened to respected Savannah business woman, Loretta Michaels. With little evidence and doubts from others, I am driven to follow a lead that many others suspect could be a wild goose chase. Will my instincts lead me to a killer? And how far am I willing to go to bring the killer to justice?
Favorite Halloween costume as a child or adult?
Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday. It’s so much fun to decorate and dress up to be something/someone other than yourself. I often find myself going back to a witch or vampire costume. Sometimes I wonder if I had been one of them in a previous life.
Recently my husband and I took a trip to Savannah, Georgia for some research for the series that I am writing. We went on one of those Haunted Ghost Tours. While I didn’t see anything at the time, or experience anything seemingly paranormal, I took some pictures to check out later. The next morning while going through them I came across a ghostly figure in one of my cemetery pictures and also some movement in the darkness in one of my videos. Both things I did not see the night before. What do you think?
What fictional character would be your nightmare neighbor?
Probably Leatherface and his family. I’d be very leery about going over for a neighborhood barbeque. “Hey, is that Jim you’re wearing?” “What kind of burgers are we having?” would not be a question I’d want the answer to either. Also, with all that chain sawing going on, I’d probably never get any sleep. Plus, there is something just so unsettling about that sound and the thought of one of my body parts being hacked off by it.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on the third book in my Detective Series. No title yet, but will hopefully be the conclusion of my main characters biggest case.
Biggest horror/thriller novel influence?
I love James Patterson and almost everything that he has published. My current detective series idea came from his women’s murder mystery books.
When you finish a book, do you take time off or jump into another project?
I usually take some time off. I will read for a while, usually from different, more light-hearted genres, before I start on the next book.
Rachel Renee, born and raised in and around Cincinnati, Ohio, finds herself residing with her family in the suburbs. After completing a degree in psychology and racking up thousands of dollars in debt, she decided to become a stay at home mom and homeschool her children, all the while working on her writing career. While she is not using her degree in the secular world she uses it on a daily basis, psychoanalyzing her husband of 13 years and two children (9 & 7), her two dogs, three cats and her life as a writer and teacher. While Rachel enjoys reading books from many different genres, she also enjoys writing different genres as well, her first release being a contemporary romance and her second two are murder mysteries entitled Instincts and Human Nature, a series following a female detective through solving murder cases in Savannah, Georgia.
Stay tuned as Rachel continues her journey!
