I’ve read nearly all of Kate Mosse’s books and have always been captivated by her writing; however, this one didn’t grab me as the others did. The cover is beautiful and the setting is perfect for a Gothic thriller. The descriptions are so vivid I felt as if I could smell the sea air and see the English countryside and village.
That being said, sometimes there was too much detail – especially when describing the weather. Gothic thrillers/mysteries typically move along at a more leisurely pace, something I don’t mind at all, but in this case, I’d guessed the secret long before the end – which may have been due to the sheer number of convenient coincidences in this story.
A couple of the characters are very charming (Davey and Harry) and the ending appropriate, but this isn’t my favorite book from this author. If you enjoy darker Gothic thrillers that are more about the journey than the destination, I’d recommend this book.
