On a totally unrelated topic, my son and I saw City of Bones this weekend and, looking at the box office numbers, we were among the few who did.  I’ve been a fan of this series for several years and had high hopes for this movie, but due to some serious miscasting (Magnus Bane in particular) and less than stellar acting, I was ready to get up and leave far before the end of the movie, but we stuck it out.  A huge disappointment and I doubt there will be a second movie, but that’s just my opinion.  Anyone else see it?

  1. Yup, but you know I did. I think I liked it a little bit better not having read the books but it by no means was a good movie. I think I tend to be a bit nicer in my reviews than I should sometimes, lol.

    That book looks interesting. 🙂

  2. My son hadn’t read the book and I think he liked it a little better than I did, but he wasn’t crazy about it.

I really think you’d like Wink, Bradley – a lot of supernatural elements.

  3. Oh, no…. I have been anxiously awaiting this movie too, because I loved the book! I haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet, but I’ve now read both your review and Bradley’s. So sad…. I’ll have to see it anyway–just because I loved the book so much, but at least I’ll be prepared for disappointment.

    1. Stephanie – don’t want you to think all of it was bad! I thought Jonathan Rhys-Meyers was perfect as Valentine and Lily Collins did a good job as Clary. You know what they say – you can’t go by what the critics say! Hope you enjoy it.

  4. Okay, so I saw City of Bones Friday night. The visuals were good, but I thought they made some really weird choices about what to change from the book. I mean, seriously, why have the scene where Hodge is telling Valentine to lie? The reader being just as in the dark as Clary and Jace are is part of what makes the book work. And the demons at the Institute? And Magnus…really? He had no affect at all. And Magnus is one of the best characters…. Sigh. Oh, well, it was pretty. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t feel the love either.

  5. I agree – that was a big giveaway to the audience. Magnus was probably the biggest disappointment to me because he’s such a great character. You’re right – it was definitely pretty!
